What I learned about getting new carpet

February 11, 2021

Getting new carpet is soooo adult. I feel like I have officially entered adulthood after this.

Never having done the whole new carpet thing, we made sure to visit several carpet locations, select some carpets and then have our home measured to get firmed up quotes so we would know what we were working with.

We decided to get quoted for two different carpets at two different stores here locally. We had the carpet we actually wanted and then the more basic option so we could have all of the facts and make our final decision based on how prices came back… because cost is a huuuuuuge factor in these investments.

I will say after just the store and measuring experience, we knew who we were going to go with. We felt one store was far above the other when it came to knowledge, expertise and the over all customer experience. When the quotes came back, it solidified our choice. We went with Floors-To-Your-Home here in Avon, Indiana.

Icing on the cake was that the price difference between the basic carpet and the carpet we actually wanted was minimal, so we got to get the pretty stuff!! Turn around for install was just about a week and we were ready for it. That meant we had to have the rooms cleared of all furniture and things. We weren’t willing to pay for them to move our stuff so we did it ourselves. Additionally, we wanted to repaint a couple of rooms before they installed so we didn’t have to be careful with the paint over new carpet, so the pressure was on!

We repainted those spaces on Saturday with the help of my parents and Monday was the big move day. They were arriving to install bright and early Tuesday morning, so everything except our bed and nightstands had to be moved Monday night.

Waiting on new carpet

Tuesday morning they arrived on time and literally started working immediately (my kind of people!). By 2:30p they were gone and I could start reassembling our house. To put it in perspective for you, we had the following rooms recarpeted in our home:

  • Dining Room (on the main floor)
  • Stairs
  • Small loft
  • Hallways leading to bedrooms upstairs
  • Master Bedroom
  • Master Closet
  • Spare Bedroom
  • Spare Bedroom Closet
  • Office

It honestly turned out perfect. Better than I could have imagined honestly. We are thrilled that we went with our ideal option and not the ‘safe’ choice. The ‘safe choice’ is your typical carpet with speckles. I am like a kid on Christmas looking at our carpet every day and I know I would not be as giddy over it if we had chosen the ‘safe choice.’

Things I learned in the carpet process or at least things that were reiterated in the process that I might have known but this solidified.

Get Multiple Quotes
This is something you know but takes extra leg work and you just want it done. You tell yourself that there can’t be thaaaaaat big of a difference, but there IS! Each is its own experience and you will know. Don’t get thrown because one has a beautiful show room and the other is basic. You want people that know their stuff and are more focused on taking care of you as a customer.

Don’t Settle
Like I said, I would not be nearly as giddy over our new carpet if we had not gone with what we really wanted. This pattern is so modern and beautiful and just us. Don’t take the easy way out. And if money isn’t there, you wait a little longer. Or if you need, find another similar version that might save you some dollars. Basically, don’t settle. This is a pricey investment and you want to love it.

Clear Your Spaces
Do your vendors well and treat them like you would want to be treated. Don’t clear things half way, but truly move your stuff out of their way so they can do their job and do it well. Leave spaces so they can add the transition pieces and not cut corners because you cut corners.

Turn off the Motion Detection on your Smart Doorbell
They are going to be walking in and out of your house one billion times. Do yourself a favor and find the toggle that turns off your motion detection while they are there so your phone doesn’t blow up every minute.

I hope this helped you in your own carpet journey. We LOVE our new carpet and can’t recommend Floors-To-Your-Home more if you are in the central Indiana area!

Cheers,
Kortni Marie
